How to Fix Drainage Problems in Oklahoma City’s Clay Soil

If you’ve ever walked into your backyard after a heavy rain and sunk ankle-deep into standing water, you already know the problem. How to Identify Your Drainage Problem

Standing water in the yard: Water that pools on the lawn after rain and takes 24–48 hours or longer to drain. Usually caused by compacted clay, low spots in the grade, or both. This is the most visible and common issue.

Erosion and washout: Bare channels cut through your lawn or landscaping where water runs fast during heavy rain. Often appears along fence lines, down slopes, or through garden beds. The water is moving, but it’s doing damage on its way out.

Oklahoma-Specific Drainage Challenges

Clay doesn’t absorb, it sheds. When Oklahoma clay gets saturated, it stops accepting water almost entirely. Rain that falls faster than a quarter inch per hour essentially runs off the surface because the soil beneath is already at capacity. That’s why a two-inch rainstorm in an hour creates standing water that a slow half-inch rain over several hours wouldn’t.

Flat lots offer no natural drainage path. Many OKC neighborhoods, particularly in areas developed in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, were graded relatively flat. Without a natural slope to move water away from structures, it has nowhere to go but down or sideways, and “sideways” often means toward your house.

Seasonal flooding patterns amplify the problem. Oklahoma’s wet season (spring, and again in fall) delivers heavy rain in concentrated bursts. The clay hasn’t dried and loosened between storms, so each subsequent rain event hits soil that’s already saturated. Common Drainage Solutions

French Drains: A perforated pipe buried in a gravel-filled trench that intercepts groundwater or surface water and redirects it to a safe outlet (street, alley, drainage easement). French drains are one of the most versatile solutions available, they work for standing water, soggy lawn areas, and water collecting near foundations. Dry Creek Beds: A gravel or rock-lined channel that gives fast-moving surface water a designated path through the yard. They work best on properties with a natural slope and a clear outlet point.

Regrading: Reshaping the ground so that water flows away from structures rather than toward them. Proper grading slopes the ground away from the foundation at roughly 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet.

Downspout Extensions and Drainage Pipes: Routing downspout water away from the foundation via surface extensions or buried drainage pipe. Often the most cost-effective fix when the problem is concentrated around the house perimeter rather than across the full yard.

Catch Basins: A surface drain inlet, usually installed at the lowest point of a yard or patio, that captures pooling water and routes it underground to an outlet. Useful for paved areas, low spots with no outlet, or anywhere a French drain isn’t practical.

Many drainage solutions work best in combination- a French drain paired with regrading, or a catch basin that ties into an existing downspout line. The goal is always the same: give water a clear, intentional path out of your yard and away from your home.
